English Touring Opera's New Season


Robin Norton-Hale, the General Director of the English Touring Opera (ETO), has revealed the company's upcoming season and launched various digital events and educational initiatives.

Since assuming the position in January of this year, Norton-Hale has implemented significant changes to broaden the scope of ETO's work. These initiatives include diverse programming encompassing multiple disciplines, refreshed repertoire, commissioned English translations of librettos, digital commissions, and educational and community engagement programs in schools and local communities.


In a press release, Norton-Hale stated,


"The evolving opera landscape in England underscores the vital importance of ETO's work. We aim to bring the exhilarating experience of opera to a wide audience, demonstrating how this centuries-old yet ever-evolving art form can reflect and resonate with the world we inhabit today." -Robin Norton-Hale

The 2023-24 season unfolds as follows


First on the agenda is Monteverdi's "The Coronation of Poppea," featuring a cast that includes Jessica Cale, Feargal Mostyn-Williams, Kezia Bienek, Martha Jones, Elizabeth Karani, Trevor Eliot Bowes, Amy J Payne, and Keith Pun, among others. Robin Norton-Hale directs the production, conducted by Yshani Perinpanayagam.

  • September 30, 2023 – London, Hackney Empire

  • October 13, 2023 – Leamington Spa, Royal Spa Centre

  • October 17, 2023 – Norwich, Norwich Theatre Royal

  • October 20, 2023 – Saffron Walden, Saffron Hall

  • October 27, 2023 – Snape, Snape Maltings

  • November 3, 2023 – Buxton, Buxton Opera House

  • November 10, 2023 – Exeter, Exeter Northcott Theatre

  • November 15, 2023 – Poole, Lighthouse

Next in line is "La Cenerentola," featuring Esme Bronwen-Smith, Joseph Doody, Edward Hawkins, Edmund Danon, and Arshak Kuzikyan. The production is conducted by Naomi Woo and directed by Jenny Ogilvie.

  • November 8 & 11, 2023 – Exeter, Exeter Northcott Theatre

  • November 14, 2023 – Poole, Lighthouse


Additionally, productions of Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress" and Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" are scheduled for Spring 2024, with specific dates and casts to be announced later.
