Opéra de Paris & Palais Garnier Shutdown Extends Due to National Strike

The continuing strike over pension rights have forced the companies to extend its shutdown to January 11, at the earliest. Artists who have been engaged for cancelled productions will still be paid, however, opera lovers are disappointed that they can not see their favorite artists perform at these scheduled events and likewise the artists who will not get the opportunity to perform. The national strike has been affecting performance events in Paris, especially the operatic scene, and seems to be continuing through the middle of January.

The national strike started on December 5, 2019, which lead to a number of prestigious venues being closed down, including Palais Garnier and Opéra Bastille, causing performances of Price Igor and Il Pirata to be cancelled as well. High-profile operatic stars were affected due to the strike, such as Sondra Radvanovsky, Michael Spyres, Ludovic Tézier, Ildar Abdrazakov, Elena Stikhina, Dmitry Ulyanov and Anita Rachvelishvilli.
