We are not holding our breath, but apparently “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” is still scheduled to return to the stage on Sunday, January 26, 2020. at the Opéra Bastille.
Rossini’s opera was set to star Xabier Anduaga, Lisette Oropesa, Carlo Lepore, Krzysztof Bączyk, Tommaso Barea, Marion Lebègue, and Ilya Kutyukhin in the title role. Carlo Montanaro was scheduled to conduct the production by Damiano Michieletto.
This is the fifth scheduled performance of "Il Barbiere di Siviglia' that has been cancelled at Opéra National de Paris due to the national strikeagainst the French government’s pension reform.
The strike has caused the opera house to cancel a number of high profile productions including Borodin’s “Prince Igor” and Bellini’s “Il Pirata” in December. On January 21, 2020 the company was also forced to cancel the opening night of Offenbach’s “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.”
