Academy of Vocal Arts Announces New Resident Artists


The Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) is delighted to announce the addition of six exceptionally talented singers to its esteemed Resident Artists roster.


Joining the ranks of Resident Artists at AVA are Joshua Berg, a remarkable tenor, Manli Deng, a captivating soprano, Ariana Maubach, a talented mezzo-soprano, Veronica Richer, an extraordinary soprano, Geoffrey Schmelzer, a powerful baritone, and Nan Wang, a versatile bass-baritone.


Scott Guzielek, President and Artistic Director of AVA, expressed great enthusiasm for the new additions, stating,

"We are thrilled to welcome these extraordinary artists to the Academy of Vocal Arts. They represent the future of opera and embody the passion, dedication, and artistry that we strive to foster at our institution. We are confident that their presence will enrich our community and captivate audiences with their exceptional talents."

Joshua Berg, a recent graduate of Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, has honed his vocal performance skills and showcased his talent as a studio artist at The Aspen Music Festival and School, as well as a vocal fellow of the Music Academy of the West.


Manli Deng has garnered numerous accolades, including the esteemed first place in the Sylvia Green Voice Competition. She also distinguished herself as a finalist at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2019 and 2020, solidifying her position as a rising star.

Ariana Maubach has showcased her artistry with renowned companies such as Des Moines Metro Opera, the Spoleto Festival, and the Music Academy of the West, impressing audiences and critics alike with her captivating performances.


Veronica Richer, a graduate of the Mannes School of Music and the Boston Conservatory, has graced the stage with her exceptional soprano voice, having performed with the esteemed Bay View Music Festival. Her talent and dedication have earned her recognition in the industry.

Geoffrey Schmelzer has left an indelible mark on the operatic scene with his powerful baritone voice. Having collaborated with esteemed companies including Central City Opera, Northwestern Opera Theater, and Finger Lakes Opera, Schmelzer's performances have resonated with audiences worldwide.


Nan Wang, a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and the Central Conservatory of Music in China, has displayed his immense versatility as a bass-baritone. With notable collaborations with the Glimmerglass Festival and the Chautauqua Institute, Wang's talent has shone brightly in the operatic world.


The addition of these outstanding artists to the Resident Artists roster at AVA is a testament to their exceptional skills and promise as opera stars of the future. Their arrival promises to further elevate the artistic atmosphere at AVA, captivating audiences with their remarkable talents and contributing to the vibrant opera community.
