Greek National Opera's 'Nabucco' Features Stellar Cast

The Greek National Opera is set to bring back Italian director Leo Muscato's highly anticipated production of Verdi's "Nabucco" to the stage from July 26th to 30th, 2023. The historic and breathtaking Odeon of Herodes Atticus will serve as the venue for this remarkable opera revival.

Drawing together a talented international cast of singers, the production promises an extraordinary lineup. Dimitri Platanias and Tassis Christoyannis will take turns in portraying the titular role of Nabucco, while Ekaterina Semenchuk and Maria José Siri will alternate as the formidable Abigaille. The opera will also feature Yannis Christopoulos and Konstantinos Klironomos as Ismaele, Vitalij Kowaljow and Petros Magoulas as Zaccaria, and Elena Maximova and Marissia Papalexiou as Fenena.

Guiding the performance with his skilled baton, Paolo Carignani will conduct the orchestra, ensuring a mesmerizing musical experience for the audience.

Muscato's unique interpretation of Verdi's early masterpiece seeks to transcend historical accuracy. Instead, the production embraces an abstract setting that aims to focus on the essence of the narrative. Muscato draws attention to the tragedy of deported and enslaved Jews, drawing parallels between historical events such as the Holocaust and contemporary situations like those found in Guantanamo Bay.

The production of "Nabucco" has been made possible through the generous support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, whose grant has allowed for the realization of this grand operatic undertaking.

Opera enthusiasts and cultural aficionados alike eagerly await the return of "Nabucco" to the Greek National Opera. With its stellar cast, evocative production, and poignant themes, this revival promises to be a must-see event that will captivate audiences and honor the timeless beauty of Verdi's work.
