Juan Diego Flórez Headlines Royal Opera House's 'Werther'

The Royal Opera House has made an announcement regarding a change in the cast for the performance of "Werther" scheduled for June 28, 2023.

Tenor Jonas Kaufmann, unfortunately, had to withdraw from the production due to an illness. However, the audience will still be treated to a remarkable performance as Juan Diego Flórez will be stepping into the title role.

Juan Diego Flórez, a renowned Peruvian tenor, is no stranger to the Massenet opera, having previously performed it at the ROH in 2019. His first portrayal of "Werther" took place at the Opernhaus Zürich in 2017. The Royal Opera House has been privileged to witness Flórez's exceptional talent in various other operas such as "La bohème," "Orphée et Eurydice," "La Fille du régiment," "La donna del lago," "Il barbiere di Siviglia," and "Mathilde di Shabran."

Flórez will be joining a stellar cast for this production, which includes Aigul Akhmetshina as Charlotte, as well as notable performers like Alastair Miles, Gordon Bintner, and Sarah Gilford, among others. The renowned conductor Antonio Pappano will be leading the orchestra.

The opera "Werther" will be running from the date of the cast change until July 4. However, it's important to note that as of now, the ROH website still indicates that Kaufmann is expected to return for the last two showcases.
