Maria Callas Olympia City Music Theatre Announces Special Concert with Julie Fuchs

The Maria Callas Olympia City Music Theatre has revealed its exciting lineup for the upcoming 2023-24 season, featuring a captivating selection of operas in both staged productions and concert formats. This season will showcase a fusion of Greek artists and international stars, with a special concert performance by the acclaimed soprano, Julie Fuchs.

The season commences with a remarkable concert presentation of Bellini's "I Puritani" on October 14, 2023. The production boasts an impressive cast, including John Osborn as Lord Arthur Talbot, Christina Poulitsis as Elvira, Iurii Samoilov as Sir Riccardo Forth, Nahuel Di Pierro as Sir Giorgio, Martha Sotiriou and Enrichetta Di Francia, George Papadimitriou as Lord Gualtiero Valton, and Shay Ratia as Sir Bruno Robertson. Alphonse Cemin will conduct the Athens State Orchestra for this enchanting performance.

In November, the spotlight shifts to Händel's "Semele." This production, directed by George Petrou, stars Marie Lys in the title role, with Jeremy Ovenden as Jupiter/Apollo, Dara Savinova as Ino/Juno, Rafał Tomkiewicz as Athamas, Gianluca Margheri as Cadmus/Somnus/High Priest, and Marilena Striftombola as Iris. The City of Athens Symphony Orchestra & Athens Chamber Choir, conducted by George Petrou, will bring this captivating opera to life on November 3, 4, 8, and 10, 2023.

Nikos Hadjiapostolou's well-regarded operetta, "The Apaches of Athens," takes center stage in December. This production skillfully depicts the interwar society of Athens through the adventures of a city tramp, featuring memorable melodies and an inspiring musical performance led by director Vasilis Mavrogeorgiou. The operetta stars Christos Kechris/Yannis Fillias as Kostas/The Prince, Yiorgo Ioannou/Georgios Iatrou as Karoubas, Marinos Tarnanas/Nikos Ziaziaris as Karkaletsos, Angelos Papadimitriou/Christos Stergioglou as Xenophon Paralis, Myrsini Margariti/Annie Fassea as Vera Parali, Diamanti Kritsotaki/Martha Sotiriou as Titika, Marita Paparizou/Margarita Syngeniotou as Aretousa Parali, Grigoris Poimenidis as Kyr Andreas, and Yannis Tsoumarakis as Kleon. Zozo Sapountzaki makes a guest appearance, and Kornilios Michailidis conducts the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra & Chorus. Performances will take place on December 14, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, and 23, 2023.

On January 11, 2024, the City of Athens Chorus will enchant audiences with "Traditional Songs from Europe," a musical journey featuring compositions by Brahms, Bartók, Dvořák, Kodály, and Vaughan-Williams. Thanos Margetis will accompany the chorus on the piano, while Stavros Beris conducts the performance.

Prepare for a captivating concert experience on January 21, 2024, as some of the world's leading singers gather for "Boulevard Des Italiens." This concert will feature arias and ensembles from composers such as Spontini, Cherubini, Rossini, Donizetti, and Verdi. Soloists include soprano Catherine Hunold, tenor Dmitry Korchak, and bass Riccardo Fassi. Under the baton of Alessandro Bonato, the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will bring the beautiful melodies to life.

On January 27, 2024, soprano Christina Poulitsis will join forces with the Athens Philharmonia Orchestra for a captivating presentation of music by Tchaikovsky, Ambroise Thomas, Spyros Samaras, Meyerbeer, and Berlioz. The performance will be conducted by Byron Fidetzis.

Experience the vibrant spirit of traditional Spanish folk music and zarzuela in "¡Viva España!" on February 10, 2024. Baritone Pablo Galvéz will mesmerize audiences with his captivating performance, while Andreas Tselikas conducts the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra.

On February 17, 2024, the concert format of Spryos Samaras' opera, "Medgé," will transport audiences into a mesmerizing world. The opera stars Lucie Peyramaure as Medgé, Konstantinos Klironomos as Nair, Dimitris Platanias as Selim, Héloïse Mas as Vazanta, Christophoros Stamboglis as Kadur/The Great Brahmin, and Florent Leroux-Roche as Amgiad. Byron Fidetzis conducts the Athens Philharmonia Orchestra & City of Athens Chorus for this enchanting performance.

Reviving the National Opera of Greece production, "La Cenerentola" will grace the stage from April 12 to 18, 2024. Directed by Angela-Kleopatra Saroglou, the production showcases Svetlina Stoyanova as Angelina, Matteo Macchioni as Don Ramiro, Jan Antem as Dandini, Giulio Mastrototaro as Don Magnifico, Davide Giangregorio as Alidoro, Annie Fassea as Clorinda, and Martha Sotiriou as Tisbe. Nikolas Nägele conducts this captivating production.

On April 26, 2024, soprano Julie Fuchs will join pianist Alphonse Cemin for a captivating concert featuring an exquisite selection of music by Fauré, Ravel, Wolf, as well as folk and Broadway tunes.

Conductor Yuval Zorn will lead the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in an Easter concert on April 29, 2024. This concert will feature mesmerizing compositions by Mendelssohn, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Fauré, with soprano Vassiliki Karayanni and baritone Pavlos Pantazopoulos as the esteemed soloists.

In the highly anticipated Greek debut of Fauré's masterpiece "Pénélope," soprano Catherine Hunold takes on the captivating title role. This extraordinary production also features an exceptional cast, including Julien Henric as Ulysse, Anaïk Morel as Euryclée, Jérôme Boutillier as Eumée/Eurymake, Vassilis Kavayas as Antinoüs, Yannis Filias as Léodès, Florent Leroux-Roche as Ctésippe, Anthony Kordopatis as Pisandre, Chryssanthi Spitadi as Cléone, Elana Maragkou as Mélantho, Marilena Striftombola as Phylo, Diamanti Kritsotaki as Alkandre/Eurynome, and Annie Fassea as Lydie/Un Pâtre.
