Nashville Opera Unveils Historic Recording of Carly Simon's Opera 'Romulus Hunt'

Nashville Opera and Lexicon Classics have teamed up to release a groundbreaking recording of Carly Simon's first and only opera, "Romulus Hunt." This historic collaboration aims to celebrate Simon's upcoming 80th birthday on Sunday, June 25, 2023.

Originally commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the Kennedy Center in 1993, "Romulus Hunt" holds a special place as a semi-autobiographical work by the renowned pop singer. The opera revolves around the story of Romulus, a 12-year-old protagonist who grapples with a difficult decision involving his divorced parents, drawing inspiration from Simon's own experiences as a mother.

The recording will feature an exceptional cast including Victor Robertson, Susannah Biller, Adriana Zabala, Gus O'Brien, and Matthew Treviño. Leading the Nashville Opera Orchestra will be conductor Dean Williamson. The executive production of the recording is overseen by John Hoomes, with Dean Williamson and Pat McMakin serving as producers and mixing engineers. Mastering responsibilities will be handled by Luke Gilfeather.

Simon collaborated closely with Hoomes to refine and enhance various aspects of the opera for this recording. This involved making minor musical adjustments, significant staging revisions, and directorial enhancements. While select excerpts from "Romulus Hunt" were released commercially in 1993 following its initial staging, the complete opera has remained unpublished until now. This recording promises to unveil the full artistic vision of Carly Simon's opera to the world.
