Portland Opera Unveils Exciting 2023-24 Season: Embracing Tradition and Innovation


Portland Opera has set the stage for an exhilarating 2023-24 season, showcasing a captivating blend of beloved classics and innovative new works that will captivate audiences. With a deep commitment to the evolution of the art form, Portland Opera continues to push boundaries and bring their mission, vision, and values to life both on and off the stage.


Kicking off the season is Mozart's timeless masterpiece, "The Marriage of Figaro." Conductor Elizabeth Askren and director Fenlon Lamb lead a talented cast, including Jesus Vicente Murillo as Figaro, Leela Subramniam as Susanna, Richard Ollarsaba as the Count, Esther Tonea as the Countess, Deepa Johnny as Cherubino, and Tesia Kwarteng as Bartolo. Audiences can experience the enchanting world of Figaro and his mischievous escapades on October 28, November 3, and 5, 2023.


Next on the program is a unique production titled "Enchanted Woods: Shakespeare & Song," inspired by the works of Shakespeare. This immersive event combines the musical compositions of Britten, Betsy Jackson King, and other esteemed composers. Set in a cabaret-style setting, audience members can indulge in a forest picnic of treats while enjoying the soul-stirring melodies performed by the Portland Opera Orchestra, as well as the exceptional curator and soloist Katrina Galka. Don't miss this enchanting experience on February 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11, 2024.


Continuing their commitment to diverse storytelling, Portland Opera presents the west coast premiere of the operatic adaptation of Ezra Jack Keats' beloved children's book, "The Snowy Day." This heartwarming production features music by Joel Thompson and a libretto by Andrea Davis Pinkney. Under the guidance of conductor Damien Geter and director Omer Ben Seadia, the cast, including Flora Hawk as Peter, Lianna Wimberely Williams as Mama, and Adrian Rosales as Billy, brings this beloved tale to life on March 16, 22, and 24, 2024.


The grand finale of the season culminates with "Puccini: In Concert." This extraordinary performance, celebrating the centennial of the composer's passing, pays homage to the timeless masterpieces of Giacomo Puccini. Audiences will be treated to exquisite selections from renowned operas such as "Madama Butterfly," "Tosca," "Turandot," "La Bohème," and more. Conductor Damien Geter will lead the orchestra, accompanied by exceptional soloists Malcolm MacKenzie, Karen Vuong, and Anthony Kalil.
